Michael Simkins LLP lands role in Universal Music’s acquisition of EMI Records Date: 21/11/2011

Media law specialists, Michael Simkins LLP, advised Universal Music, the world's largest music company, on the music rights aspects of its historic £1.2 billion acquisition of EMI’s recorded music division from Citigroup.

EMI operates around the world and represents artists spanning all musical tastes and genres through record labels including Angel, Astralwerks, Blue Note, Capitol, Capitol Latin, Capitol Records Nashville, EMI Classics, EMI CMG, EMI Records, EMI Records Nashville, Manhattan, Parlophone, Virgin Classics and Virgin Records.

The Simkins team was led by Ed Baden-Powell, who commented: "It’s rare for transactions in the music industry to hit the front page of the Financial Times, and so we were delighted to be asked by Universal to be involved."

Richard Constant, General Counsel at Universal Music Group International, said: “Simkins did a great job - their commitment and quality of work were very much appreciated.”

SJ Berwin was lead legal adviser for Universal. Clifford Chance was lead legal adviser to Citigroup.
